Storage Bed or Standard Bed? Find the Right Fit
Choosing the right bed frame is about more than style — it’s about how your bedroom functions every day. At The Granary Gifts & Furniture near Findlay, OH, we offer both storage beds and standard platform beds, each handcrafted from solid hardwood by Amish builders. Whether you’re maximizing space in a smaller bedroom or designing a clean, minimalist retreat, understanding the difference helps you make the best choice for your home.
Storage Beds (Captain’s Beds)
A storage bed — sometimes called a captain’s bed — includes built-in drawers or shelving integrated directly into the frame. These beds are ideal for maximizing space, especially in smaller bedrooms or guest rooms.
Storage beds give you hidden drawers under the mattress to store linens, seasonal clothing, or extra blankets — helping you keep your room clutter-free without adding extra dressers.
Many models also feature:
- Built-in side drawers
- Footboard drawers
- Headboards with shelving
- Integrated nightstand-style compartments
Because these beds are typically platform-based, they still provide full mattress support like a traditional platform bed — but with significantly more storage built in.
Ideal For:
- Smaller bedrooms near Findlay homes
- Children’s rooms
- Guest rooms
- Homeowners who want fewer standalone furniture pieces
Standard / Platform Beds
Standard platform beds offer a simpler frame without built-in storage. They often have a low-profile silhouette and clean lines, making them perfect for minimalist or modern spaces.
While you can still place bins underneath a standard bed, they don’t offer the seamless, built-in convenience of storage drawers.
Standard beds are often available in styles that focus more on design details than storage functionality, including:
- Sleigh beds
- Canopy beds
- Panel beds
- Mission or farmhouse styles
Because they contain fewer moving parts, standard beds are typically lighter and easier to move or rearrange.
Ideal For:
- Larger bedrooms
- Homeowners who already have sufficient dresser storage
- Those who prefer a clean, uncluttered aesthetic

What Is a Wardrobe?
A wardrobe is a tall, freestanding cabinet designed primarily for clothing storage.
It typically includes:
- Hanging rods for garments
- Adjustable shelves
- Lower drawers for folded items
- Optional mirrored doors
Wardrobes are especially helpful in:
- Older homes with limited closet space
- Guest bedrooms
- Children’s rooms
- Master bedrooms needing overflow storage
Because each wardrobe is built to order, you can customize interior layouts to match your specific storage needs.
What Is an Armoire?
An armoire offers similar vertical storage but often includes additional versatility.
Many armoires can be designed to function as:
- Clothing storage
- Media cabinets (with hidden TV compartments)
- Blanket storage
- Combination wardrobe and drawer units
Armoires are ideal for homeowners who want concealed storage without built-in cabinetry. Their taller profile adds visual presence and can anchor a bedroom wall beautifully.
Nightstands: Practical Storage at Your Bedside
Nightstands do more than hold a lamp — they anchor your bed and provide easy-access storage for daily essentials.
Our solid wood nightstands often feature:
- One, two, or three drawer configurations
- Open shelf designs
- Hidden charging stations (where available)
- Soft-close drawer options
- Custom sizing to match bed height
A well-sized nightstand ensures your bedroom feels balanced and functional without feeling crowded.
Dressers: Organized, Durable & Built to Last
Dressers are one of the hardest-working pieces in your bedroom. That’s why solid wood construction matters.
Our Amish-crafted dressers offer:
- Dovetail drawer construction for strength
- Full-extension drawer glides
- Custom drawer configurations
- Matching mirrors (optional)
- Tall chests for vertical storage
Families throughout Northwest Ohio often choose dressers that can transition from childhood to adulthood — built strong enough to grow with the homeowner.
Custom Bedroom Furniture
Your bedroom should reflect your style, your space, and your daily routine. At The Granary Gifts & Furniture near Findlay, OH, every bedroom set is built to order by skilled Amish craftsmen. From selecting wood species to adjusting dimensions and adding custom features, we help you create bedroom furniture that fits your home perfectly.
All of our bedroom furniture begins with solid hardwood — never veneers or particle board. This means your bed, dresser, nightstand, or wardrobe can be crafted in the wood species and finish that best complements your home.
You may choose from options such as:
- Brown maple for smooth grain and rich stain flexibility
- Cherry for warmth that deepens beautifully over time
- Oak for traditional strength and visible grain
- Quartersawn white oak for distinctive character and texture
Because everything is built from solid wood, finishes can be carefully matched across your entire set. Whether you’re trying to coordinate with existing furniture or designing a completely new look, you can select from various wood species and stain colors to create a cohesive, intentional bedroom.
Many Findlay homeowners appreciate that this level of customization ensures their bedroom furniture blends seamlessly with their flooring, trim, and overall décor.

We ordered a set of dressers and nightstands from The Granary in Findlay, Ohio in late fall of 2024. The staff was the most accommodating in working with us to delay placing our order with the manufacturer a few months and subsequently delaying shipment until after we knew the timing of the sale of our home in Ohio and our move to our new retirement home in Maine. In early summer of 2025, once in residence a thousand miles always from Ohio, we called The Granary who promptly communicated to the shipper on our behalf to initiate transport of our order to our new address. It took a few weeks for the shipper to combine our order with another heading to New England, which we had been told to expect, since ours was a partial load. Once a shipping date was determined, the shipper called us to say when they’d be arriving with our lad and gave us the name and cell phone number of the driver. It arrived on time, as promised. We were extremely impressed with the driver’s skills in backing his 24 ft. box truck into our tree-lined, curving driveway to get as close to the delivery entrance as possible. The furniture pieces were all extremely well protected in plastic, which the movers handled flawlessly, carrying them into the house in light rain. After unpacking them and setting them in place in our bedroom they confirmed our satisfaction before leaving. We are thrilled with our purchase, both in terms of quality and service. Everyone we worked with throughout the process was very helpful and professional. We would not hesitate to work again with the staff at The Granary and have orders shipped to our Maine home.
